ZV Beauty of the Week: John Stuart Mill – ZoliaVera
  • ZV Beauty of the Week: John Stuart Mill

This week's beauty of the week is John Stuart Mill.

This may seem at first like an unconventional choice for our beauty of the week until you find out a little bit about Mr. Mill.  Born May 20, 1806 he was an aberration for his time. He was a philosopher, a public servant, and political economist. He was very socially and politically active. John was a author who wrote extensively on some topics that were hot button issues of his day as they continue to be now. Liberty, freedom of speech, and slavery. He believed strongly in the rights of women and the philosophies that he held privately, he shared quite publicly. He wrote "The Subjection of Women" in 1861 making him one of the earliest men to write on the subject at all. While he focused primarily on the cause of the married woman, he discussed the topic of feminism with authority, especially being married to one himself! One of my favorite quotes from the book is this, “We have had the morality of submission, and the morality of chivalry and generosity; the time is now come for the morality of justice.”

John Stuart Mill was an outspoken voice for women amongst his contrary contemporaries and still has a lot to add to the discourse if we are willing to take a look at some of what he had to say!
